Beyond the effects of existing cardiovascular disease, systemic inflammation is not related to the presence of age-related maculopathy, according to a large study.
Burkhard Dasch, MD, MSE, and colleagues at the Institutes of Epidemiology and Social Medicine in Germany analyzed data from 873 subjects between the ages of 59 and 82 years old who were already enrolled in the Muenster Aging and Retina Study. The subgroup was analyzed with bilateral gradable fundus photographs and complete data on fibrogen, C-reactive protein and “potential confounders” to determine the association between the variables and the progression or development of age-related maculopathy.
After adjusting for cardiovascular risk factors, there was no statistically significant association between fibrogen or C-reactive protein and age-related maculopathy, the authors said.
The study is published in the November issue of Archives of Ophthalmology.
