Program director Richard L. Lindstrom, MD, along with course moderators Douglas D. Koch, MD, William J. Lipham, MD, FACS, Robert H. Osher, MD, and Thomas W. Samuelson, MD, have tailored the Twelfth Annual Ocular Surgery News Symposium in New York City at the New York Marriott Marquis into “a comprehensive program for the anterior segment surgeon,” Dr. Lindstrom said.

Based on the success of past meetings, this year’s meeting includes new and interactive programs and the OSN Compliance Case Studies session with Alan E. Reider, JD, focusing on legal and regulatory issues in ophthalmology.

The two-day meeting begins Saturday, Sept. 20, and features presentations on Refractive Cataract Surgery; New Technologies in Ophthalmology; Wavefront-driven Custom Ablation; and Glaucoma, Retina and Oculoplastics; all of which are customized for the anterior segment surgeon.

Saturday

The Cataract symposium will kick off the meeting with keynote speaker Edward Manche, MD, discussing surgical prophylaxis. Topics within the session include new treatment options in glaucoma surgery, an examination of indications for newly approved glaucoma management and a discussion on advances in cataract surgery, including IOL selection.

After a break, Dr. Koch will head the Refractive Cataract session with several speakers focusing on such topics as IOL calculations, astigmatism, correction of presbyopia and wavefront-guided IOL design.

A panel discussion, New Technology: Exploring the Future, directed by Dr. Osher, will start the afternoon sessions. Panel participants include Stephen S. Lane, MD, and Dr. Lindstrom.

The final session of the day will focus on oculoplastics and will be led by Dr. Lipham. Topics discussed will include integrating cosmetic services into your ophthalmology practice with David E. Holck, MD, and how to use dermal filler agents with Gregg Gayre, MD.

In the evening, a series of workshops focusing on the topics from the day’s events will be held.

Sunday

The morning session on Sunday, Sept. 21, will begin with the new interactive case study and review session with Mr. Reider, based on the popular Ocular Surgery News column, Compliance Case Studies, which he authors. The presentation will review a series of timely legal and regulatory issues and will focus on the impact they can have on your practice.

An open forum discussion will be held during the presentation.

Emmett T. Cunningham, MD, will follow with his presentation Retina: Pharmacotherapy of AMD and DME.

The final session of the morning will be a glaucoma panel discussion led by Dr. Samuelson focusing on the question “Glaucoma: A Medical or Surgical Disease?” Panel participants will include Richard P. Wilson, MD, and Alan S. Crandall, MD.

The session will be followed by brunch in the Exhibit Hall.

The afternoon session will begin with a wavefront technology presentation by keynote speaker, Stephen Schallhorn, MD. Dr. Schallhorn will present “LASIK in the Naval Aviator.”

Other topics within the session will include optics of wavefront sensing by Ronald Krueger, MD; and personal experience with Custom Cornea by Stephen Brint, MD. Zyoptics will be presented by Scott MacRae, followed by Pearls of Zyoptics with Louis Probst, MD. Dr. Koch will present Visx CustomVue clinical results; and Dr. Lindstrom will end the session with visual acuity and night vision results with the Visx S4.

The final session of the meeting will be Refractive Cataract Surgery. Various topics will be presented, including CK for presbyopia, phakic IOLs and tips and pearls for the new IntraLASIK surgeon in independent practice. Presenters will include Louis D. Nichamin, MD, and Eric D. Donnenfeld, MD.

The symposium is sponsored by SLACK Incorporated, which is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education. Physicians can earn up to 10.5 CME credits at this program.
