Surgical outcomes comparable for ultrasound and drill for lateral orbital decompression

Ultrasonic bone removal may be a reasonable alternative to high-speed burring during lateral orbital decompression for thyroid eye disease, according to a study.

In a retrospective analysis of 36 consecutive lateral orbital decompressions — half were performed with an ultrasonic surgical aspirator, and a high-speed cutting burr was used in the other half — there was no significant difference in postoperative visual acuity, proptosis reduction, lagophthalmos, eyelid retraction, exposure keratopathy or surgical complications.

According to the study, average reduction in proptosis was 3.9 mm in the ultrasound group and 4 mm in the drill group. Average surgical time was slightly shorter with ultrasound compared with the drill (104 minutes vs. 188 minutes).
