BERLIN — Multifocal IOLs stimulate surgeons to improve the quality of their relationship with patients and with their team of co-workers, a surgeon said here.

"Since patient selection and education is crucial, I had to learn to spend more time with my patients, which turned out to be very rewarding. This is what I tend to do now, every time I can," Kerry Solomon, MD, said during a symposium on multifocal IOLs at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting.

Efficient teamwork, he said, is also important to the success of this procedure.

"This resulted in better communication between us and encouraged us to be more cooperative, flexible and adaptable, improving the motivation and the morale in our working environment. We are now not only a more efficient, but also a better, happier and friendlier team of people," Dr. Solomon said. "In this kind of environment, patients feel more reassured and well looked after, trust their doctors more and are more cooperative. To charge patients a premium price, you need to give them a premium service."
