Surgeon shares new refractive technologies adopted in clinic this year

NUSA DUA, Indonesia — Several new refractive technologies have made it into routine use in the clinic while several more have just been introduced this year, one refractive surgery expert said here.
Michael C. Knorz, MD, shared the new technology he is using in his clinic in a presentation at the joint meeting of the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Knorz said he is now routinely using iLASIK and the AcrySof phakic IOL in his practice.
He stressed that iLASIK is more than just a marketing term for Abbott Medical Optics. "This is a different kind of LASIK that results in better vision," he said. iLASIK refers to the use of femtosecond laser flap creation in 10 seconds and individualized treatment through wavefront-guided excimer laser.
Dr. Knorz said he is using the AcrySof phakic IOL from Alcon because it is a simple procedure that takes less time than LASIK, and there are good 10-year results with the lens, which is more than any other phakic IOL in the industry.
Two other technologies he is incorporating into his practice currently are the IntraCor (Technolas Perfect Vision) excimer laser procedure and the AcuFocus intracorneal inlay. Both technologies are for presbyopia correction. IntraCor creates five concentric rings on the cornea with an excimer laser, changing the biomechanics of the cornea to increase depth of field, he said. The AcuFocus inlay uses a small aperture to increase depth of field. Both technologies are now CE approved, he said.
