Surgeon: Monovision LASIK has advantages
BUENOS AIRES Monovision LASIK has the ability to restore multifocal capacity with less need for correction, making the procedure advantageous for meeting patients' current high demands for visual quality, according to a surgeon speaking here.
Jorge Alío, MD, PhD, discussed the advantages and disadvantages associated with monovision LASIK at the Argentinean Society of Ophthalmology Congress. He noted that the procedure works for distance, near and night vision. It is also psychologically accepted by patients and is easily reversed.
In a study of 184 patients who averaged 47.6 years of age, only 5% required re-treatments, and four patients were dissatisfied with monovision. Additionally, only four patients wanted to reverse their eye dominance, and one patient wanted to lessen the dominant eye's myopia, he said.
However, Dr. Alío admitted that the procedure does have some inconveniences. Some patients have low contrast sensitivity and issues with stereopsis, he said.
