Micro-incision cataract surgery is a bimanual procedure. Irrigation and aspiration instruments enter through separate incisions.

THOROFARE, N.J. — Micro-incision cataract surgery can improve safety and reduce trauma for cataract patients, said Jorge L. Alío, MD, PhD. He describes his laser cataract technique in the upcoming Dec. 1 issue of Ocular Surgery News.

Micro-incision cataract surgery (MICS) can now be performed through an incision of 2 mm or less, Dr. Alío said. The eventual goal for the surgery is an incision of 1 mm, he added.

The smaller incision allows faster recovery and less disruption of tissue. Dr. Alío said the equipment to operate through smaller incisions is available, but better fluidics will be needed to make the surgery safer.
