KAANAPALI, Hawaii — In the United States, factors such as improved safety, precision and reproducibility of femtosecond laser refractive cataract surgery will help expand a private-pay market, according to one speaker here.
"The precision of laser refractive cataract surgery will drive rapid innovation in IOL design and the evolution of less invasive cataract removal techniques," OSN Chief Medical Editor Richard L. Lindstrom, MD, said at Hawaiian Eye 2011 in a presentation on the future of the procedure.
Other factors that will drive the success of the procedure are that variable steps of manual surgery will be replaced with precise, repeatable steps by all surgeons, according to Dr. Lindstrom.
A reduction in effective lens position and the ability to accurately correct pre-existing astigmatism will also create demand and meet refractive outcome expectations within the baby boomer population.
