ROME - The PhysIOL Slim IOL allows for accurate power calculation, is easy to implant and performs well in the eye, according to the surgeon who implanted it in a live surgery session at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons winter meeting.

"My experience is with just a few dozens of these lenses, but I have never had a single problem with them," Claudio Carbonara, MD, said.

He said there are three unique qualities he particularly likes about the PhysIOL Slim (Optik Medikal).

"They are pre-mounted on an injector, and therefore easy and safe to implant. They have a blue-light filter to protect the retina. Finally, the A-constant, reported on the packaging, is very precisely calculated also for the use of the IOLMaster, minimizing the risk and the amount of postoperative refractive errors," he said.

These aspheric lenses have a good performance in terms of contrast sensitivity and depth of field.

During implantation, Dr. Carbonara was able to show the audience how easily the lens slipped into the chamber, spontaneously positioning itself in the capsular bag. If this does not occur, the surgeon can exert gentle pressure on the plate.

"The loops are so well-designed that they adapt perfectly and naturally to their space," he said.

In the eyes he has so far implanted, Dr. Carbonara reported no cases of posterior capsule opacification.
