Subretinal organization associated with incomplete retinal reattachment

BALTIMORE — Subretinal organization can be found in a small amount of stage 5 retinopathy of prematurity eyes, and is associated with incomplete retinal reattachment in all cases, a large study found.

Scott Steidl here with the University of Maryland School of Medicine and Tatsuo Hirose with The Schepens Retina Associates in Boston retrospectively reviewed the charts of 426 eyes that underwent vitrectomy for stage 5 retinopathy of prematurity. Of those eyes, 130 received laser therapy, cryotherapy or a combination. In 44 eyes (10.3%), subretinal organization was observed and considered the cause of incomplete retinal attachment. Three forms of subretinal organization were identified: subretinal bands, subretinal plaques and diffuse subretinal organization. A large majority of the subretinal organization occurred in eyes that received cryotherapy.

The study is published in the March issue of Graefe’s Archive for Clinical and Investigative Ophthalmology.
