Subjective analysis of stereoscopic images deemed ‘useful’
As a method for discerning between normal and glaucomatous optic nerves, subjective analysis of digital stereoscopic images is useful, according to a study.
J.E. Morgan, DPhil, FRCOphth, and colleagues at University Hospital of Wales in the United Kingdom performed a cross-sectional analysis of the diagnostic accuracy of digital stereoscopic optic disc analysis to determine its accuracy in glaucoma diagnoses. Fifty-two patients with open-angle glaucoma and 54 healthy volunteers were recruited.
With subjective stereoscopic analysis, sensitivity for glaucoma detection was 80.8%, 76.9% and 90.4% among three observers. Two observers had specificities of 79.6%, and one had specificity of 94.4%. A combination of the subjective and quantitative analysis did not significantly improve discrimination.
