Study: YAG rates higher with Stabibag than AcrySof IOL
The Nd:YAG capsulotomy rate was higher in eyes implanted with a hydrophilic acrylic IOL than in those implanted with a hydrophobic acrylic IOL, according to a Norwegian study.
Per Bjørn Stordahl, MD, and Liv Drolsum reviewed the records of 705 eyes that underwent phacoemulsification with posterior chamber IOL implantation during a 1-year period to determine the incidence of YAG capsulotomy. Of the eyes, 370 were implanted with the IOLTech Stabibag IOL and 335 were implanted with the Alcon AcrySof. Mean follow-up was 23 months in both groups.
Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy was performed in 7.6% of the Stabibag IOL group and in 2.7% of the AcrySof group. Survival analyses demonstrated that age and type of IOL were the only independent predictors of the incidence of capsulotomy.
The study is published in the August issue of Acta Ophthalmologica Scandinavica.
