Study: Transscleral diode laser lowers IOP at 1 year
Transscleral diode laser cyclophotocoagulation lowered intraocular pressure for 1 year in a small study of Chinese patients with chronic angle-closure glaucoma.
A diode laser was used to treat 14 eyes with chronic angle-closure glaucoma in a study by Jimmy Lai, FRCS, FRCOphth, and colleagues at Hong Kongs United Christian Hospital. Pressures in the eyes while on medication were higher than 21 mm Hg. The eyes were treated on the inferior 270° quadrant. Postoperatively, if medications failed to lower IOP, treatment was repeated.
Total success was defined as an IOP of less than 21 mm Hg with or without medication. At 1 year, the success rate was 85.7%. The mean number of IOP-lowering drops was significantly reduced from 1.9 per eye preop to 0.4 per eye postop. Two eyes required re-treatment. Seven eyes had atonic pupil following the laser treatment.
