Study shows cryosurgery effectively treats eyelid basal cell carcinomas

NEW ORLEANS — An ongoing prospective study of 458 tumors treated with cryotherapy for basal cell carcinoma shows that cryosurgery has “a high cure rate, is well-tolerated, gives a good cosmetic result and does not harm the lacrimal drainage system,” according to Gun Lindgren, MD, PhD.

Dr. Lindgren presented results of the study here at the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery meeting with 10-year follow-up. Of 427 patients, 114 were showing no recurrence of basal cell carcinoma, he said. Cryosurgery was performed on 55 patients with tumors greater than 10 mm and 74 canthal lesions. These patients have also been followed for 5 or more years.
