BOSTON — Using topical azithromycin in conjunction with warm compresses and lid hygiene is an effective mixed blepharitis treatment and also improves dry eye conditions, according to a presenter here.

In a study presented at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting, Thomas John, MD, used optical coherence tomography to measure tear meniscus before and after 3 to 4 weeks of the azithromycin treatment for both anterior and posterior blepharitis.

The study looked at 44 eyes of 22 patients with mixed blepharitis. They were instructed to use lid hygiene and warm compresses twice daily along with topical azithromycin 1% solution. After analyzing 432 OCT images, Dr. John found a significant increase in the area of the inferior tear meniscus and concluded that the tear volume in the inferior tear meniscus increased.

"There was a beneficial effect in the evaporative dry eye with secondary increase in tear meniscus and tear volume," Dr. John said.
