Study reveals hyperopic shift after DSAEK

Cornea. 2009;28(1):19-23.

A hyperopic refractive shift was present approximately 4 months after Descemet's stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty in a study of 45 cases.

At final follow-up, the mean change in refraction was +0.88 D, but there was only a small negative correlation with respect to graft thickness, which did not reach statistical significance.

This retrospective analysis of refractive outcomes was conducted in 17 cases of Descemet's stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) triple surgery and 28 cases of pseudophakic DSAEK.

Preoperative best corrected visual acuity ranged from 20/4000 to 20/20 with a mean of 20/161, and at final follow-up after DSAEK, mean BCVA was 20/41.

"Further studies to follow these refractive changes over a longer follow-up period and to investigate the mechanism of this refractive change after DSAEK surgery are warranted," the study authors said.
