Study: Retinal detachment earlier after complicated phaco
PARIS Time between cataract removal and retinal detachment was significantly shorter in eyes that underwent vitrectomy to remove posteriorly dislocated lens fragments, according to a study done here. Aside from the timing of the RD, however, posterior capsular rupture and vitreous loss did not seem to affect the features or outcomes of RD surgery after phaco.
Researchers here with University Paris VI reviewed the charts of 114 consecutive eyes that had RD after phacoemulsification. All eyes were followed for 6 months or more postoperatively.
Eyes with posteriorly dislocated lens fragments removed by pars plana vitrectomy during phaco had a significantly shorter time interval between phaco and RD than eyes without any intraoperative complications (P = .0044).
The overall anatomic reattachment rate was 94%. Ultimate anatomic failure was correlated only with redetachment associated with the development of proliferative vitreoretinopathy (P = .0036). Best corrected visual acuity of 20/60 was achieved in 51% of the eyes.
