Study: Postop anti-inflammatory use did not affect PCO

Use of topical steroidal and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs after phaco and IOL implantation did not affect the formation of posterior capsular opacification during 2 years of follow-up, a prospective study found.

Anna Zaczek, MD, PhD and colleagues at St. Erik’s Eye Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden, measured aqueous flare intensity preoperatively and out to 2 years postop among patients who were given diclofenac, dexamethasone or a placebo for up to 3 weeks following cataract surgery.

At 2 years follow-up, no significant differences between groups were seen in PCO formation. Median rates of PCO, as measured by the Evaluation of Posterior Capsular Opacification system, were 0.72 for dexamethasone-treated patients, 0.78 for diclofenac-treated patients and 0.7 for patients receiving placebo (P > .05).

The authors noted that there were also no significant differences between groups in rates of Nd:YAG capsulotomy.

The study is published in the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
