Study finds OCT evaluations are reproducible for retinal vein occlusion trials

Excellent annual regrades for intergrader agreement of optical coherence tomography quality were found in the SCORE Study.
Out of 106 randomly selected images in the SCORE (Standard care versus corticosteroid for retinal vein occlusion) Study, the first two annual regrades had 91% and 89% intergrader agreement for quality with Stratus OCT (Carl Zeiss Meditec).
"Optical coherence tomogram evaluation procedures used in the SCORE Study are reproducible and can be used for multicenter longitudinal studies of retinal vein occlusion," the study authors said.
The OCT images were obtained with fast macular and crosshair scan protocols at a clinical site and evaluated as paper prints at a central reading center. Accuracy of the OCT-measured retinal thickness results were measured with a quality evaluation of good, fair, borderline or ungradeable. Center point thickness was also measured manually on borderline images, and morphological evaluation for several factors was taken.
The study found that "intraclass correlation for manually measured center point thickness was 0.99 per year." It also found that in morphological variables, "intergrader agreement for cystoid spaces was 83% and 76%."
