Study finds multifocal diffractive IOL improves reading performance, quality of life

J Cataract Refract Surg. 2011;37:27-37.

Implantation of a multifocal diffractive IOL yielded good near vision and better reading performance, which positively affected patient quality of life after surgery, according to a study.

In the prospective case series, 48 eyes of 24 bilateral cataract patients were implanted with the Acri.Lisa 366-D multifocal IOL (Carl Zeiss Meditec).

At 1-month follow-up, the mean uncorrected distance visual acuity improved significantly (P < .01), and no changes were observed during the 6-month follow-up period.

Uncorrected mean reading acuity improved significantly from 0.68 logRAD ± 0.20 to 0.16 ± 0.08 logRAD at 1-month follow-up (P < 0.01), but it was worse at 6-month follow-up (P = .04). Researchers also found no significant change in the mean reading speed without near correction after 6 months.

However, the quality-of-life index related to reading ability on the National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire-25 improved significantly at 3-month follow-up (P = .03).

In addition, contrast sensitivity at all spatial frequencies under photopic and scotopic conditions improved significantly at 6-month follow-up (P ≤ .02), which improved the patients' ability to drive.
