Study finds compliant contact lens wearers have more comfort, better vision

Compliant contact lens wearers had better end-of-day comfort and better vision when their lenses needed to be replaced than noncompliant patients, a study found.
As part of a larger study evaluating compliance with manufacturers' recommendations for contact lens replacement frequency, 1,344 patients wearing silicone hydrogel contact lenses were asked to rate their vision and comfort at different times of the day and when the lenses needed replacing. Subjects were asked to rate their experience from 0 (very poor) to 10 (excellent).
According to the study, comfort and vision in the morning and when lenses were new were significantly higher than the scores for the end of the day and when lenses needed to be replaced. Of total study participants, 29% were noncompliant with the manufacturers' recommendations, which had a significant effect on the way lenses felt and functioned at the end of the day and when they needed to be replaced.
"Optimal subjective performance with [silicone hydrogel] lenses seems to be facilitated by replacing lenses as recommended," the study authors said.
