Study: Donor scleral patch can be used to repair leaks
A donor scleral patch, sutured with 4-0 nylon, can be used to repair a leaking bleb over a macerated scleral bed, according to a recent publication. Loose suturing of the posterior border of the patch helped to prevent IOP spikes, the authors said.
Noga Harizman, MD, and colleagues reviewed the charts of 15 patients who underwent bleb revision with donor scleral graft. The average follow-up was 22 months.
At baseline, the patients had a mean visual acuity of 20/50 and a mean IOP of 2.9 mm Hg. At final follow-up, mean VA had improved to 20/30 and the mean IOP was 14.1 mm Hg.
The technique “ensures tight adaptation of the scleral patch over the leaky region and allows better-controlled aqueous flow with loose suturing of the posterior edge of the scleral patch,” the authors said.
The study is published in the December issue of Journal of Glaucoma.
