Waiting to perform corneal transplant in eyes with keratoconus is warranted if the patient can tolerate contact lenses, a study found. Refractive and visual outcomes for penetrating keratoplasty (PK) are independent of a patients preoperative corneal curvature or irregularity, according to a study.
Yi Liu, MD, and colleagues the University of Nuremburg, Germany, retrospectively studied 236 patients with keratoconus who underwent PK. The patients were divided into four groups based on preoperative keratometric values: group 1 was less than 50 D, group 2 less than 60 D, group 3 was 60 D and group 4 had irregular corneal shape with unmeasurable K values.
No significant differences in postop values were found among the four groups.
After suture removal, the percentage of regular keratometry mires increased from 37% to 61%.
The study is published in Cornea.
