Study: Be wary of phaco, IOL implantation for IOP control
Phacoemulsification and IOL implantation for the management of intraocular pressure control in patients with angle-closure glaucoma after relief of pupillary block is useful, according to one study. However, these patients may run the risk of intraoperative complications, authors said.
Toshiaki Kubota and colleagues with the National Nagasaki Medical Center in Japan studied 18 eyes from 15 patients who had undergone either laser iridotomy (17 eyes) or peripheral iridectomy (1 eye). Follow-up ranged from 6 to 36 months.
Mean IOP significantly decreased from 17.4 mm Hg preoperatively to 13.5 mm Hg at 6 months postop. Visual acuity did not worsen in any eye; 14 eyes gained more than 2 Snellen lines. Corneal epithelial cell counts decreased from 2,365/mm² to 1,960/mm².
The study is published in Ophthalmologica.
