Asian patients with complicated glaucoma achieved satisfactory intraocular pressure reduction after implantation of Baerveldt glaucoma implants, researchers in Singapore found. The size of the drainage device had no impact on the success of the surgery.

Tin Aung, FRCOphth, and colleagues at Singapore National Eye Centre retrospectively reviewed the charts of 124 Asian patients with complicated glaucoma who underwent Baerveldt implants during a 5-year period. IOP was reduced from a mean preoperative level of 36.5 mm Hg to 15.3 mm Hg; the number of glaucoma medications was also reduced from a mean of 2.6 preop to 0.5 postop. Of the eyes, 94 were considered qualified or complete successes. Postop complications occurred in 43 eyes and 21 required additional surgical intervention.

The study is published in the May issue of Ophthalmology.
