Study: Angle of deviation progressively increases in acquired esotropia
Increases in the angle of deviation occur frequently in younger patients with acquired nonaccommodative esotropia, according to a study. This finding underscores the importance of performing serial measurements before surgical intervention, researchers said.
Anna Kitzmann, MD, and colleagues at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., reviewed the records of 79 patients diagnosed with acquired nonaccommodative esotropia who underwent more than one examination. Of those, 26 displayed an angle increase of at least 10 PD during a median follow-up of 2.9 months. The review found that those patients were diagnosed and underwent surgery at a significantly younger median age than those whose angles increased less than 10 PD.
The study is published in the October issue of Journal of the AAPOS.
