Standardization key to reduced cataract surgery times, survey suggests
Ambulatory surgery centers with the shortest cataract procedure times are those with standardized instruments, procedures, supplies and equipment, according to a report on best practices from the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care.
The report from the AAAHC is based on data collected from 71 ambulatory surgery organizations with annual cataract extraction volume ranging from 200 to 8,777 procedures.
According to the report, “more intensive staffing can reduce various aspects of procedure time such as pre-procedure, post-procedure, procedure, turnover and discharge.”
The shortest pre-procedure times occurred in organizations in which the preop team reviewed procedures with patients well before the procedure, so the time devoted to the admission process was greatly reduced, according to a press release from the AAAHC.
Median procedure time for the participating centers was 14 minutes.
More than half the organizations use more than one operating room per surgeon. Use of standardized instruments by all surgeons helped reduce procedure times as well, the AAAHC said.
