MONROVIA, Calif. — The STAAR Toric ICL has received the CE mark from the European Union.

The Toric ICL is a posterior chamber phakic IOL designed both to reduce existing astigmatism and to provide correction of myopia or hyperopia in one procedure.

The lenses are “made-to-order for each patient,” said David Bailey, president and chief executive officer of STAAR. The company received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in Jan. 2002 to initiate clinical investigation of the lens in the United States.

Before receiving the CE mark, STAAR had delivered the Toric ICLs to physicians under the ‘named patient’ procedure, according to Mr. Bailey.
