STAAR Surgical's net loss deepens in 2006

MONROVIA, Calif. — STAAR Surgical reported a net loss of $15 million for the full-year 2006, a drop of almost $4 million compared with its net loss of about $11.2 million for 2005, according to a press release from the company.

Despite the loss, STAAR reported a 27% increase in total product sales for the year, rising to $15.3 million from $12 million in 2005. International sales rose 4% to $34 million, and U.S. sales rose 19% to $22.3 million, according to the release.

Sales of the Visian ICL rose 129% for the year and represented 21% of the company's total sales. The ICL achieved a 50% increase in international sales for the full year, but U.S. sales fell 16% during the fourth quarter compared with the third quarter of 2006, according to the release.
