STAAR Surgical reports $13.6 million in third quarter product sales

MONROVIA, Calif. — STAAR Surgical recorded $13.6 million in total product sales for the third quarter, an increase of 2.4% over the same period of last year. The year-over-year increase in sales during the quarter was led by increased international sales, which grew 17% compared with the third quarter 2006, according to a press release from the company.

Global third quarter cataract sales declined 1.5% compared with the third quarter 2006, while total refractive sales increased 17.1%.

For the first 9 months of 2007, product sales totaled $43.5 million, an increase of 4.7% over the same period 2006. The increase in 9-month sales was also led by international product sales, which grew 16.6% to $28.5 million.

International third quarter sales increased 16.9% over the third quarter 2006 to total $8.9 million. Also compared with the third quarter 2006, third quarter 2007 international refractive sales increased 44.9% to $2.29 million and cataract sales increased 9.6% to $6.5 million.

U.S. sales for the third quarter decreased 16.9% compared with the same period last year and totaled $4.74 million. Also compared with the third quarter 2006, third quarter 2007 U.S. refractive sales decreased 16.2% to $1.1 million and U.S. cataract sales decreased 16.8% to $3.6 million, according to the release.

For the first 9 months of 2007, U.S. sales totaled $14.99 million, a 12.2% decrease compared with the same period 2006, and U.S. refractive sales decreased 4.6% to $3.3 million.

For the third quarter 2007, STAAR reported a net loss of $3.8 million, or $0.13 per share, compared with a net loss of $2.8 million, or $0.11 per share, for the same period of 2006, according to the release.
