MONROVIA, Calif. — STAAR Surgical reported $18.1 million in total product sales for the third quarter, representing a 33% increase compared with $13.6 million during the third quarter of 2007, the company announced in a press release.

The sales increase was largely due to a 50% rise in international product sales for the quarter, which included $2.9 million in sales from STAAR Japan, according to the release.

While third quarter sales in the United States remained relatively stable at $4.8 million, U.S. sales of the Visian ICL totaled $1.3 million, up 24% from $1.1 million during the same period last year.

STAAR also reported a third-quarter net loss of $2.3 million, or $0.08 per share, compared with a net loss of $3.8 million, or $0.13 per share, during the same period last year. The deficit includes $1.6 million in non-cash expenses.
