STAAR Surgical posts 20% rise in first-quarter sales

MONROVIA, Calif. — STAAR Surgical reported $17.96 million in total sales for the first quarter, a 20% increase over $14.92 million for the first quarter of 2007, the company announced in a press release. The sales growth was largely due to a 37% rise in international product sales, which included $2.81 million in sales from STAAR Japan, as well as $1.14 million due to currency fluctuation, the release said.

Total first-quarter sales in the United States were $4.52 million, down 11% compared with $5.09 million in the first quarter of 2007. First-quarter U.S. ICL sales totaled $1.1 million, a 9.3% increase compared with $1 million in the same period last year.

STAAR's first-quarter net loss totaled $8.9 million, or $0.30 per common share, compared with $3.5 million, or $0.14 per common share, in the first quarter of 2007. Of the $8.9 million loss, $6 million resulted from the acquisition of STAAR Japan, including $3.9 million in settlement costs and $1.5 million in charges to cost of goods.

STAAR reported $13.41 million in total cataract sales for the quarter, a 21.7% rise over $11.02 million for the fourth quarter of 2007. Total ICL/TICL sales rose 17.5% to $4.28 million, compared with $3.64 million in last year's first quarter.
