MONROVIA, Calif. — STAAR Surgical reported net sales of $13.3 million during the first quarter of 2006, a 3% decline from the year-ago period, the company said in a press release. ICL sales increased 73% during the quarter compared to the year-ago period, and accounted for 18% of the company’s overall sales during the quarter, the release said

Preloaded silicone IOL sales increased 29% from the first quarter of 2005, the release said.

U.S. net sales for the quarter increased 4% to $5.1 million, and “primarily reflects the launch of the Visian ICL in the first quarter of 2006,” the company said. First quarter 2006 cataract product sales declined 13% in the United States compared to the year-ago quarter, STAAR said.

“The slight, overall decline in year-over-year international sales during the first quarter was mostly attributable to difficult cataract market conditions in Germany,” said David Bailey, president and chief executive officer.
