MONROVIA, Calif. — STAAR Surgical Co. reported improved performance for the second quarter 2006, driven by refractive product sales, according to a press release.

Second quarter product sales totaled approximately $14.6 million, a 4.7% increase over the second quarter 2005 and a 9.4% increase over the first quarter 2006. For the first six months of 2006, product sales increased 1% over the same period last year to total approximately $27.9 million, according to the release.

The company achieved 106.9% year-over-year sales growth in its refractive business, totaling approximately $3.45 million. Company officials attributed the growth to increased sales of STAAR’s Visian ICL, which grew 76%. Visian ICL and refractive support product sales in the United States totaled approximately $1.3 million for the quarter, with U.S. sales of ICLs totaling approximately $1.2 million.

International ICL and toric ICL sales grew 26.3% over the second quarter 2005 to approximately $2.1 million. Year-to-date international sales of ICLs and toric ICLs grew 24.9% to approximately $3.8 million.

Cataract product sales in the U.S. declined 8.1% for the quarter compared with the same period of 2005, but grew 7.4% over the first quarter 2006, according to the release.
