Spectral domain optical coherence tomography may be used in children, according to a study presenting normative data for a Turkish population between the ages of 6 and 16 years.
Peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer, macular thickness and macular volume measurements were calculated for 107 healthy eyes using the Spectralis OCT (Heidelberg Engineering) in an institutional, observational case series.
Average axial length was 23.33 ± 0.89 mm, while average spherical equivalent was -0.27 ± 0.99 D. Average peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness and average macular thickness were 106.45 ± 9.41 µm and 326.44 ± 14.17 µm, respectively. Average macular volume was 0.257 ± 0.011 mm³.
Measurements were not significantly correlated with age, spherical equivalent or axial length values. However, while prior studies showed no significant sex-based difference in retinal nerve fiber layer measurements, this analysis demonstrated a difference between girls and boys in the temporal inferior segment.
