ENGELWOOD, Colo. — Smaller ambulatory surgery centers have better net income per case than their larger counterparts, while the larger centers report lower operating costs per case, according to a recently released report.

The report, based on surveys conducted by the Medical Group Management Association, said that ASCs in which fewer than 3,000 cases per year were performed reported a mean net income of $473.02 per case, while ASCs with more than 3,000 cases per year reported a mean net income per case of $341.32 in 2004.

Larger ASCs pay less for medical and surgical supplies and have lower total operating costs per case than smaller ASCs, the report states. ASCs with fewer than 1,999 cases per year paid $228 per case for medical and surgical supplies; ASCs with more than 5,000 cases per year paid $185 per case.

The report was the result of a collaboration between the Medical Group Management Association and the American Association of Ambulatory Surgery Centers.
