SLT with fewer laser spots deemed equally effective, possibly safer

Selective laser trabeculoplasty with half the amount of energy of the standard treatment protocol produced a similar effect with an increased possibility of repeating the procedure, investigators said

SLT with 25 laser spots over 90· of the trabecular meshwork had a similar IOP-lowering effect to SLT with 50 laser spots over 180· of the trabecular meshwork, said Enping Chen, MD, PhD, and colleagues at St. Erik’s Eye Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden.

They compared the pressure-lowering effect of SLT in two groups of patients: The first 32 patients received the standard SLT and the second 32 patients received the halved treatment.

No difference in IOP reduction between the two treatment regimens was found. IOP reduction was also not influenced by previous argon laser trabeculoplasty treatment.

The authors speculate that fewer laser spots could increase the repeatability of the procedure and reduce potential tissue damage in the trabecular meshwork.

The study is published in the February issue of Journal of Glaucoma.
