SLT lowers IOP early, but longer-term effect decreases in study

Selective laser trabeculoplasty successfully lowered IOP at 1-year follow-up, but less effect was seen during the course of the year than initially, a prospective study found.

Barbara Cvenkel prospectively studied the effect of SLT on IOP in 44 eyes of 31 patients with uncontrolled open-angle glaucoma. IOP was measured postoperatively at several time points out to 12 months.

The average preoperative IOP was 25.6 mm Hg. At 24 hours, mean IOP reduction from baseline was 7.1 mm Hg. At 1 year mean IOP reduction from baseline was 4.4 mm Hg.

A pressure spike of 8 mm Hg or more was detected in four eyes (9.1%). Anterior chamber reaction at 1 hour postop was mild to moderate in 16 eyes and marked in three.

The study is published in Ophthalmologica.
