SLT efficacy similar to ALT at 1 year
Selective laser trabeculoplasty was as effective as argon laser trabeculoplasty in lowering IOP in patients with open-angle glaucoma, a study in Canada found.
Karim Damji, MD, and colleagues at the Ottawa Eye Institute randomly assigned 176 eyes of 152 patients to treatment with either ALT or selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) performed with the Selecta 7000 laser from Lumenis. In all cases, laser treatment was applied to 180° of the trabecular meshwork.
At 1 year, the researchers found no significant difference in mean IOP decrease or in the rate of early or late complications between the two groups. IOP decreased an average of 5.86 mm Hg for SLT patients and 6.04 mm Hg for ALT patients (P = .846), according to the study authors.
The study is published in the December issue of the British Journal of Ophthalmology.
