Simplified muscle recession surgery viable for treating Duane’s syndrome
Horizontal rectus muscle recession is a simple, effective surgical option for the correction of abnormal head position in patients with Duanes syndrome, according to a study.
Maria E. Barbe, MD, and colleagues at the University of Iowa Hospitals treated 59 patients with Duanes syndrome with either unilateral or bilateral medial or lateral rectus muscle recession surgery. Mean follow-up was 3.1 years. Success was defined as elimination of abnormal head position.
After one procedure, 93% achieved a postoperative alignment of 15· or less of abnormal head position and 66% achieved 5· or less of abnormal head position. Three patients required additional surgery.
The study is published in the January issue of the British Journal of Ophthalmology.
