Similar visual performance observed between two versions of the ReSTOR diffractive IOL

Visual performance in patients implanted with multifocal apodized diffractive IOLs showed a reduction in intermediate visual acuity when compared with near and distance vision, according to a prospective study.

"The AcrySof ReSTOR IOL and AcrySof Natural ReSTOR IOL provided good visual performance at distance and near under photopic and mesopic conditions," the authors said. "Intermediate vision with both models was reduced compared with distance and near vision."

José F. Alfonso, MD, PhD, and colleagues at Fernandez-Vega Ophthalmological Institute in Spain evaluated 325 patients bilaterally implanted with the model SA60D3 IOL (AcrySof ReSTOR, Alcon) and 335 patients with the model SN60D3 IOL (AcrySof Natural ReSTOR).

At 6 months follow-up, the researchers found that binocular logMAR best corrected distance visual acuity averaged 0.034 with the ReSTOR IOL and 0.019 with the Natural ReSTOR IOL. Binocular best distance corrected near visual acuity averaged 0.011 with the ReSTOR IOL and 0.035 with the Natural ReSTOR IOL, according to the study.

Intermediate vision with both models worsened significantly as a function of distance, the authors noted.

"Photopic contrast sensitivity was within the standard normal range with both IOLs," they said. "Under mesopic conditions, contrast sensitivity with both IOLs was comparable to that with monofocal IOLs and lower, particularly at higher spatial frequencies, than under photopic conditions. No statistically significant differences in visual acuity or photopic and mesopic contrast sensitivity were found between the two IOL models."

The study is published in the July issue of the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
