Similar postop macular edema rates between PK, lamellar keratoplasty in study

Both penetrating keratoplasty and lamellar keratoplasty appear to be associated with similarly low rates of postoperative macular edema, a prospective study found.

Olivier Genevois, MD, and colleagues evaluated the incidence of macular edema in 62 patients treated with either PK or lamellar keratoplasty.

Using optical coherence tomography (Stratus OCT 3, Carl Zeiss Meditec), the researchers found a 9.6% overall incidence of post-keratoplasty macular edema over 3 months follow-up. But, the surgical technique used did not significantly influence edema rates, according to the study.

However, "[combined] surgery significantly increased the risk of developing an edema (P < .05)," the authors wrote.

The study is published in the July issue of Cornea.
