VIENNA, Austria — Long-term results after silicone posterior chamber IOL implantation were favorable in a study conducted here.
Noémi Maár, MD, and colleagues followed up 38 eyes out of 160 that had received STAAR AA-4203C plate-haptic silicone IOL implants between September 1987 and December 1989.
The lenses were implanted through 3.5 mm corneoscleral incisions after continuous curvilinear capsulorrhexis.
With a median follow-up of 10.5 years, mean visual acuity was 0.82. Mean refraction (spherical equivalent) was +0.57 D, which was not a significant change from the mean at the first postoperative follow-up at 1 month.
Slit-lamp evaluation showed mildly dispersed pigment on the IOL surface in 82% of cases.
All IOLs demonstrated a Tyndall effect; in 84% the clouding was minimal, in 11% it was moderate and in 5% it was intense. An overwhelming majority of the IOLs (92%) were centered within 0.5 mm.
Of the 22 cases with decentration, 86% were towards the 12 o’clock position in the bag.
There were no cases of IOL-related inflammation or clinically significant cystoid macular edema.
The study is published in the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery.
