Silicon hydrogel contact lenses may be a more comfortable alternative to conventional contact lenses for treating bullous keratopathy, a study suggests.

Natasha Lim, MRCOPhth, and Ursula Vogt, MD, prospectively compared the use of two types of silicone hydrogel bandage contact lens (Focus Night & Day and PureVision, Bausch & Lomb) and one conventional lens (Sauflon 85%, Sauflon Pharmaceuticals) in 22 patients with painful bullous keratopathy. All patients were fitted with the three lenses for 1 month each, and they rated comfort and pain relief on scale of 1 to 5.

Comfort scores averaged 3.9 for PureVision lenses and 3.8 for Focus Night & Day lenses, significantly higher than for the Sauflon 85% lenses, which had an average score of 2.8 (P < .0136). However, researchers found no significant differences between the lenses in pain relief, which averaged 3.8 for PureVision lenses, 3.7 for Focus Night & Day and 3.2 for Sauflon 85%, according to the study.

The study is published in the September issue of Eye & Contact Lens: Science and Clinical Practice.
