Sequence alterations in TIGR/MYOC gene associated with POAG

HONG KONG — Alterations in the TIGR/MYOC gene may have a protective effect against primary open-angle glaucoma, according to a study here.

Researchers here studied 201 unrelated Chinese patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and 291 unrelated individuals without glaucoma aged 50 years or more. All patients were screened for sequence alterations in the TIGR/MYOC gene. Up to 111 more control subjects were screened for some of the alterations. Two gene sequence variants were found only in patients with POAG. One sequence alteration was found in four patients with POAG and nine of 402 control subjects. One alteration, Gly12Arg, occurred four times as frequently in control subjects as in patients, but the difference was not statistically significant.

The study is published in the October issue of Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science.
