A novel silicone hydrogel material may provide more relief of ocular discomfort associated with contact lens wear in adverse environmental conditions than use of patients' regular lenses or no contact lens use, a study suggests. However, "these results should be verified in a larger, appropriately powered study," the study authors said.

George W. Ousler III and colleagues evaluated the safety and efficacy of senofilcon A (Acuvue Oasys, Vistakon) contact lens wear in adverse environmental conditions. The study included 11 current contact lens users who were exposed to three 75-minute sessions in a controlled adverse environment over 2 weeks while wearing their usual lenses, senofilcon A lenses and no lenses, according to the study.

Participants reported a significantly better mean comfort score of 1.62 while wearing senofilcon A contact lenses compared with a score of 2.21 while wearing their usual lenses (P = .0068). Additionally, participants reported significantly better mean overall discomfort scores while wearing senofilcon A lenses than while wearing no lenses (P < .0001), the authors reported.

The study is published online ahead of print in Current Medical Research and Opinion.
