Mean scotopic pupil size increases in children until the age of 11 years, then decreases, according to a study.

Eva-Maria Kohnen and colleagues at Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany, measured the scotopic pupil size in 166 eyes of 83 children with a mean age of 6 years.

Mean scotopic pupil diameter was 6.06 mm in the right eyes and 6.11 mm in the left eyes, with an overall mean of 6.09 mm. An increase in mean scotopic pupil size, with a peak of 7.28 mm, was found between the ages of 10 and 11.

The study is published in Graefe’s Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology.
