Schepens Eye Research Institute to join Massachusetts Eye and Ear
BOSTON Schepens Eye Research Institute will be joining the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary on June 30 to create the world's largest ophthalmology research center, according to a joint press release.
Massachusetts Eye and Ear's board of directors will oversee the partnership with Schepens, which is the largest independent ophthalmology research institute in the United States, the release said. Schepens will keep its name and remain a nonprofit.
"It is a bad day for blindness," Wycliffe "Wyc" Grousbeck, chairman of Massachusetts Eye and Ear's board of directors, said in the release. "This creates a powerhouse in vision research that we are confident will accelerate the eradication of blinding diseases."
Schepens' focus includes ocular surface disease, immunology, stem cell therapies and mobility rehabilitation, while Massachusetts Eye and Ear specializes in clinical research in retina, glaucoma and genomics. Both institutions are Harvard Medical School teaching affiliates and will be located on one campus.
