The annual average purchases of daily disposable contact lenses and 2-week disposable lenses tended to depend on the lens brand, and results from the survey correlated with actual sales recorded, according to a survey.

Hidenori Saitou, MD, and colleagues at the Okada Eye Clinic in Japan analyzed 44,566 consumers who purchased either daily disposable contact lenses or 2-week disposable soft contact lenses between April 2002 and November 2002. The number of purchases made and brands selected were detailed for 1,584 survey respondents.

The total number of consumers who purchased daily disposable lenses was 14,909, with an average annual purchase of 10.56 boxes, according to recorded sales. Most purchases were two boxes, followed by purchases of four boxes and six boxes. Fewer than 7% purchased 24 boxes at one time; 37.8% purchased four or fewer boxes of lenses at a time.

A total of 25,705 consumers purchased 2-week disposable contact lenses, with an average annual purchase of 6.37 boxes per consumer, sales records showed. Fewer than 20% of consumers bought eight boxes of 2-week disposable lenses per year. A majority of consumers purchased their lenses in even numbers, regardless of type of lens. Survey results indicated 86.6% of the 2-week disposable soft contact lens wearers followed instructions, whereas 13.4% did not and exceeded the 2-week limit.

The study is published in the September issue of Eye & Contact Lens Science and Clinical Practice.
