RPE cells take up, bind ICG but not trypan blue

Human retinal pigment epithelium cells quickly take up and bind with significant amounts of indocyanine green after exposure to clinically relevant doses, an in vitro study found. Researcher did not observe a similar response for cells exposed to trypan blue, the study authors said.
Hiroyo Hirasawa, MD, of the University of Tokyo School of Medicine, and colleagues examined the extracellular intake of the two dyes by human retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells when applied at various surgical concentrations and time periods. The researchers found that cells took up significant amounts of indocyanine green after exposure to a 0.05% concentration for 5 minutes, a 0.01% concentration for 30 seconds and a 0.25% concentration for 15 seconds.
However, no cells took up trypan blue in any concentration, including 0.06%, 0.15% and 0.25% solutions, the authors said.
The study is published in the March issue of Retina.
